Very nice conditioned Model 1850 foot officer’s sword sold retail by H. G, Hamlin Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio complete with its matching leather scabbard. Hamlin was a retailer who bought finished swords wholesale, stamped the ricasso with his name and then offered them for retail sale. Swords with his mark are not commonly seen. Hannibal Gilmore Hamlin was reportedly the third cousin of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin who served in that position during President Lincoln’s first term in office. He also served as a US Representative and US Senator prior to the Civil War, and again as a US Senator after the war.

The drawn sword meas. approx. 36.25 inches long from point to pommel. The blade measures 30.75 inches in length. It has a stopped wide central fuller 19.50 inches long and a 14.75 inch long narrow fuller along the top edge. The blade surface is semi-bright with light mottling in spots but does get heavier toward the point. The true edge has four visible minor nicks.

The etched decoration on the blade is in good condition. The obverse is decorated with scrollwork and has a spread-winged eagle at center. The reverse ricasso is stamped with “G. HAMLIN JR CINCINNATI, O.” This side of the blade is decorated with scrollwork and a panoply of flags. At center is a block “US.”

The leather washer at the base of the blade is missing.

The detailed brass hilt features a cast guard and knuckle bow with a delicately cast single-band with cutout oak leaf scrolls and acanthus leaves. Brass hilt is tight to the blade tang. It features a grooved, center-swelled wooden handle wrapped in brown sharkskin. Skin is tightly bound with twisted brass wire that is complete throughout. Normal light wear and side seam are evident in the sharkskin. Brass pommel is decorated with laurel leaves and features a tiered domed cap. Casting on the hilt and pommel is well executed. Overall the hilt is in excellent condition.

The original black leather scabbard is complete with brass furniture. Scabbard body is in very nice condition. Seam is tight and surface finish is thin in areas but good throughout. All brass furniture wears a light patina. Drag is in very good condition with several minor dings.  [ad] [ph:L]
