The drawn saber meas. approx. 41.00 inches from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 35.00 inches with a central fuller that is 27.50 inches long. The surface of the blade is semi-bright but it does have heavy scattered mottling, oxidation spots and scattered surface pitting throughout. The edge has one moderate sized nick about a third of the way down the blade. The obverse ricasso has a worn “U.S.” over inspector’s initials “D.F.M.” with the date “1864” at bottom. The reverse ricasso has an obscured maker’s mark of “EMERSON & SILVER TRENTON N.J.” A complete leather washer remains at the base of the blade.
The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. The leather shows little wear under the pommel at the back top of the grip. The twisted wire wrap is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knuckle bow and counterguard have a dark patina that is slowly turning black. Pommel cap has inspector’s initials of “D.F.F.” The front of the brass guard has been turned downward which is considered a sign of period use.
Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard is dark with oxidation and a light coat of surface rust. Scabbard is free of dents.
A proper overall cleaning will enhance this sabre a bit. [ad] [ph:L]
