Introduced sometime after 1922, this pattern replaced the older “MA” on the quillon block with the USMA seal. Peterson reports some early versions had the helmet facing to (heraldic) sinister, which was then corrected, as here, to heraldic dexter. This one is the regulation pattern and likely dates to the 1990s. The pommel is lantern shaped with an eagle and arrows on its face and a scroll loop for a sword knot at the edge of the cap. Pommel and guard are gold color. The white metal grips are made to resemble silver wire wrapping with floral decorated ferrules. The guard has straight quillons with finials showing an eagle head biting a snake that entwines it, a nice symbol of defiance. The blade is straight, double-edged, with median ridge and is in mirror polish. The only blade decoration is the etched WKC, Solingen, maker’s mark on the long ricasso on the reverse. The blade pad is in place.

The scabbard, like the sword, is in excellent bright condition, both steel body and mounts. The grip is a tad loose and we see some rubbing to the brass elements: the crossguard and drag mainly, but this is a good example of the traditional sword of the U.S. Military Academy cadet corps.  [sr] [ph:L]
