Family ID to Lt. Edmund Byrne with service from 1814 to 1850. His name is scratched under the guard. Byrne was a midshipman in 1814, promoted to Lt. in Jan. 1825, and to Commander on 9/8/41. He commanded the sloop “USS Decatur” in 1849. He may also have been a Naval Inspector. Byrne died on 10/17/1850 and is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Manufactured: Unmarked - Likely England  Maker: Unmarked  Year: c1830  Model: Officer, Eagle pommel pre- 1841   Size: 30.25 inch, quill back blade  Condition:  Scabbard separated into two pieces, approx. 14 ½” down from the top.

This Naval Officer sword has a bright blue blade with gold engraved decoration of a fouled anchor, ring of stars and oak branch and identical decoration on the reverse. The grip is carved ivory in a fish scale design. The integral pommel and back strap are that of a large eagle head with trailing feathers. The quillons are acorns. Both the guard, decorated with acorn and oak leaf branches and the counter guard which is plain are folding guards. The scabbard is back seamed leather with engraved brass mounts. The top mount has a ring of stars around a frog stud also with a star design. It had edge engraving and a single carry ring. The middle mount has matching edge design and a large fouled anchor and has a single carry ring. The drag again has engraved edge design along with oak leaf branch. The fancy drag blade has serifs and a ball at the tip.  [ph:L]
