A scarce mounted staff sword with a curved blade and ray skin grip.
Manufactured: Philadelphia, PA
Maker: W.H. Horstmann & Sons
Year: 1850 - Civil War
Model: M1850 Mounted Staff Officer
Size: 31.75 inch curved blade
This is a rather scarce variation of the Model 1850 Staff & Field officer sword. It is made by and marked on the ricasso “Horstmann / & Sons” with “Philadelphia” on the reverse ricasso. The difference is that it was made for a mounted staff officer with a curved blade. It has ray skin grip wrap with copper dragoon style wire and two single flanking strands. The half basket guard has heavy gilt. It is designed as the regulation staff officer sword with the large US between the branches. The blade is etched with crossed cannon, a knight’s helmet, flags and banners, scroll work and another stand of arms similar to that previously described. The reverse is etched in a similar manner, all in the European etching style. The scabbard is browned steel with brass mounts. The reverse of the top ring mount has the scroll plaque reading, “Horstmann / & / Sons / Maker / Philadelphia.”
