This exact sword is illustrated in Confederate Swords by Albaugh, pages, 109, 110, 111. This unique pattern is similar to the design of the Federal US 1833 Model Dragoon sword. It is brass hilted with a two branch guard and is marked on the top of the quillon, “E. J. JOHNSTON, MACON, GA”; above the marking is a “3”, probably the serial number. The side of quillon is marked, “MACON”. The grip is a distinctive polished wood (used by Johnston & McElroy in Macon). The brass pommel is florally decorated, for an officer. The blade is a distinctive single wide fuller, stopped in the ricasso area.

This very rare sword is in a beautiful, untouched patina condition. There is some deterioration to the wood grip on the back side, and approximately 3” missing from the tip; areas of light pitting to the blade. The markings are crystal clear, and this early 1861 production sword for a cavalry officer is of a unique design. [gj]  [ph:L]
