Size: 32 inch Condition: Excellent+

The 1826 styles of the Marine Mamaluke have brought about straighter blades, acid etched blade designs, more curvature to the ivory grips and raised center scabbards making them diamond shaped in cross section. The Horstmann & Sons marked Mamelukes are quite scarce. Horstmann bought out F. W. Widmann and carried on Widmann style and likely used any of the Widmann blades on hand. This sword has an etched blade panel that reads: “W H Horstmann & Sons / Philadelphia” on the obverse blade side. Middle panel says: “United States Marines”. Reverse of the blade has an American Eagle under a ribbon and sun burst. Remainder of etch is foliate. The last 11 inches of the blade has a double fuller. This feature has continued on high quality Marine swords even those of today.

As mentioned the ivory grips are much more rounded rather than the earlier flat slab design. The gross guard is undecorated with pointed finials on the quillons. The scabbard is of the raised center line design with attached carry rings (double rings on the top mounting) and a frog stud. The drag is very distinctive and unusual. It has not been found on any Widmann Mamelukes that we have examined. It has a decorative finial on the bottom of the drag blade. A few Ames high grade swords also boast of this finial. This sword has all the characteristics and wear of a long carried sword.  [ph:L]
