Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber has an inspected blade dated 1859 making it a very early example.

The bright, slightly curved blade has a surface that shows only very minor amounts of mottling and no pitting. Blade measures approx. 35.00 inches long with a stopped wide fuller that meas. approx. 27.50 inches long and a narrow fuller that is approx. 19.00 inches long. The blade edge has several small nicks. Obverse ricasso is crisply marked “US” over “G.G.S.” over “1859.” The reverse ricasso bears a strong three-line maker’s mark that reads “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE, / MASS.”  The leather washer at the base of the ricasso shows wear but is complete.

The brass two-branch guard and knuckle bow are strong, tight and wears a pleasing mellow patina. The brass pommel cap is marked “J.H.” with “WAT” in script. The center-swell wood grip features a very nice dark brown leather that shows light to moderate surface wear but is otherwise in very good condition. Twisted brass wire wrap is tight and complete.

The original steel scabbard is bright with light scattered surface pitting. Scabbard is free of dents. Both mounts and rings are present as are the throat and drag. The surface of the drag has moderate surface wear. It looks as though there was an inspector’s mark at the bottom of one side but it is worn and hard to read. [ad] [ph:L]
