The full title is “FOUR YEARS IN THE WAR: THE HISTORY OF THE FIRST REGIMENT OF DELAWARE VETERAN VOLUNTEERS, (INFANTRY) CONTAINS AN ACCOUNT OF MARCHES, BATTLES, INCIDENTS, PROMOTIONS. THE NAMES OF ALL THE OFFICERS AND MEN WHO HAVE BEEN CONNECTED WITH THE REGIMENT FROM ITS ORGANIZATION IN 1861, TO THE CLOSE OF THE WAR IN 1865.” by the Reverend Thomas G. Murphey, late Chaplain of the regiment. Published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1866.
Volume is hardcover and bound in brown leather with the initials “ASC” stamped into the front and back covers with the title and author’s name repeated in worn gold stamping on the spine. Covers have light to moderate surface and edge wear as well as scattered surface dirt from age. The book meas. approx. 5.00 x 7.25 inches and runs 315 pages.
Interior is good but the first five pages have a faint water stain in the upper right. Some pages have minor foxing. Binding is excellent.
The 1st Delaware was organized September 10, 1861 and were eventually assigned to the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac. They saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and the siege of Petersburg.
During its service the regiment lost 15 officers and 264 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease. [ad] [PH:L]
