Classic Civil War cavalry saber made by Ames Manufacturing Company. Sword is in overall good condition. Blade is semi-bright with a few very minor edge nicks. Ricasso is stamped with a well-worn Ames & Co. maker’s stamp where only “CHICKOPEE” is visible on one side and “US” inspector’s initials and “18_4” on the other. Original leather washer remains in place.
Brass guard and basket are good. Pommel cap has a small “JH” inspector’s initials on rim. All brass exhibits smooth mellow patina. Grip is in very good condition with original leather wrap and double-twist of wire.
Scabbard shows some wear. Two major dents with associated cracks on back edge. No wear on the drag. Drag stamped with inspector’s initials. Complete with both rings and throat. A nice, used specimen. [jet] [ph:L]
