This massive iron-mounted saber is surely a one-of-a-kind early example dating from the Mexican War era.
The huge broad blade is polished bright. No edge nicks. Etched on both sides with American patriotic motifs including the owner's place and dates of service, “San Pedro 1814-1847”. The spine of the blade is etched with a vine-like leaf pattern. Curved blade measures approximately 33.25” long and is 1.5” wide; the sword’s overall length is nearly 40”.
Massive single-branch guard and a large silver grip. The grip features a lovely engraved image of a Catholic Monk holding a wine cup in one hand and a cross in the other.
The heavy iron scabbard is in very good condition with a dark gray/brown tone. The lower ring is missing and there are a few minor dings. Typical early style drag shows no wear.
A very nice, early artillery officer’s sword. [jet] [ph:L]
