An unusual pattern variant made in 1864. The maker or more likely the supplier’s name is on the top scabbard mount and reads: “V. Labruna/in/Napoli”. The grip is 3 7/8” long and topped with the pattern pommel with eagle facing right. The grip is wrapped in sharkskin with original wire wrap. The knucklebow and guard are similar in design to the British-made solid half basket hilt swords with a hinged reverse guard. The guard has a raised eagle astride an anchor surrounded by stars similar to the 1852 naval belt plate motifs. The inside of the guard is also engraved with a circular pattern.

The slightly curved blade is 29 ¼” long. 1 1/16” wide and ¼” thick at the ricasso. It has one wide fuller 19 ¾” long. The blade is etched over a relatively short 9” length. The obverse motif is a fouled anchor within a leaf spray while the reverse blade has floral sprays surrounding an oval nameplate. The blade is etched in an oval, “1862/NAPOLI/LABRUNA”. The leather scabbard has simple mounts similar to those found on period Royal Navy swords.

This exact sword is pictured on pg. 66 of U.S. Naval Officer’s Swords and Dirks by Peter Tuite.  [ss] [ph:L]
