Confederate Swords by William Glaze are some of the most popular of Confederate Cavalry Sabers. These were originally provided under contract for the State of South Carolina following 1850-53 contracts that totaled 2000 cavalry sabers. These were to be issued to South Carolina militia units.

William Glaze did not manufacture the swords, he imported them from Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) in Solingen, Prussia, and put his unique “Columbia” stamp on them.

The drawn curved blade measures approximately 36” long with a 27.5” long stopped fuller and 16.5” narrow fuller. The blade has a mottled gray tone. The edge has no nicks. The ricasso is marked with the correct “Columbia S.C” stamp.

This sword has a wonderful grip with 100% original leather and wire. The basket and pommel are in good condition with a very slight wobble. The brass has a super looking deep rich patina, very dark and uniform. The grip consists of a wood handle with cord wrapped around to form the grooves for the wire twist, and with leather wrap. The twisted brass wire is complete and tight. Leather shows very little wear with the seam showing a slight separation in places. This separation allows us to view the cord wrap that is another characteristic of S&K manufacture.

The iron scabbard is dent free. Scabbard surface exhibits a dark brown tone with light surface oxidation. Both mounts and rings are present as is the throat and heavy drag.

A fine example, being one of just 2000 cavalry sabers from William Glaze at the Palmetto Armory.  [jet] [ph:L]
