High grade, pre-war Militia officer by Horstmann with the unusual feature of no U.S. designs on the blade and a federal shield with 7 stripes and no stars on the scabbard.

This fine militia sword has a finely detailed helmet pommel, a chain knuckle bow and a beautiful spread winged eagle, emerging through a wreath, on both sides of the sword. The grip is engraved sheet silver and the quillons are both shell designs. It has a 32 inch double edged blade with a center fuller. The blade etching is foliate with “W.H. Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia” in a ribbon, a stand of arms and foliate. The reverse is foliate and stand of flags and ends with foliate. No U.S. or Federal Shield. The engraved brass scabbard has foliate mounts and is engraved with a stand of flags, an eagle, ancient panoply of arms, foliate, another stand of arms with a guidon, spears. halberd, a shield with 7 stripes and no stars, a sword, bugle and drum and foliate toward the drag. The reverse has a scroll plaque reads: “Horstmann  / & / Sons / Makers / Philada.” This style was used up to and during the Civil War by Militia officers from the north and south.  [ph:L]
