Confederate artillery short swords are collecting category of their own. This one shares enough characteristics with those of Boyle and Gamble to suggest a Richmond connection, but is possibly by another maker. Like Boyle and Gamble products, the grip is a simple series of ribs and the crossguard has a flat surface, cast without inset panels. The blade is semi-bright with moderate mottling; has a good edge except for one small nick, also a very small amount of the tip has broken off. The blade measures 19 ½” inches and the sword is 25” inches overall.

Modeled on the US 1832 artillery short sword, which was likely handy in cutting brush in gun emplacements and cutting dead artillery horses from their traces, the short sword bears a lot of similarities to its more romantic cousin, the D-guard Bowie, perhaps explaining the substantial number of makers in the south.    [sr]  [ph:L]
