This specimen is a very nice Civil War cavalry officer’s saber complete with scabbard and manufactured by Henry Sauerbier of Newark, New Jersey.
This cavalry saber is an original piece that features a profusely embellished brass hilt and a handsome, slightly curved, high quality etched blade. Blade measures approximately 34” long, 1.2” wide at the hilt with a 25.75” long fuller and 24.5” long narrow fuller. The maker’s mark is found etched on one side at the ricasso and reads, “H. Sauerbier / NEWARK / N.J.” Continuing up this side of the blade, the etchings include a foliate design with “U.S.” in the center. The other side is etched with more foliate sprays surrounding a panoply of arms in the center. The blade surface is clean and semi-bright with just a few scattered areas of darker spotting. Blade edge has no nicks.
The embellished, cast brass hilt is typical of a “Type 3” Sauerbier hilt with extra curls on the branches. Grip is more of the “type 2” style that is the typical grooved wooden handle that is wrapped in thin black leather edged twist of brass wire is in place. A phygerian-style brass pommel cap has a high dome tang with a peened blade tang. Casting detail is profuse and sharp. Half of leather washer remains.
Steel scabbard is in very good condition and exhibits a dark gray and brown patina overall. Only one small, shallow dent to scabbard and no wear on the ornate drag. Scabbard is finished with brass furniture, including the throat, upper and lower ring mounts, and the drag. Two small screws are missing from drag. Mounts are tight and strong, as are the rings.
A desirable Sauerbier officer’s cavalry saber with scabbard. [jet] [ph:L]
