PATTERN 1804 BRITISH NAVAL CUTLASS – NO SCABBARD

$795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 721-111

Overall, the cutlass meas. approx. 33.75 inches long. The blade surface is semi-bight with only minor scattered mottling. It is very flat in appearance not having any blood grooves or curvature. Blade meas. approx. 29.00 inches long with a spear type point. Blade is unmarked. True edge is free of nicks. Leather washer at the base of the blade is cracked and worn with just a small piece missing at the bottom.

Ribbed iron handle is surrounded by a flat iron guard that is very wide at the knuckles and base but narrows at the top and has a slit for a sword knot. Lower edge of the guard has a small curled quillon.

The cutlass was the mainstay blade of the seaman, short for close quarters combat, and thick-spined enough to hack man and rigging alike, the cutlass was a simple but savage weapon. [ad] [ph:L]
