The drawn saber meas. approx. 41.50 inches from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 36.00 inches with a central stopped fuller that is 26.00 inches long. The surface of this extrodinary blade is very clean and very bright. There is no mottling to speak off. The true edge is free of nicks. The obverse ricasso is strongly stamped with “US” over “J.H.” The reverse ricasso carries a crisp makers mark of “N. P. AMES” over “CABOTVILLE” over “1846.” The original leather washer is present under the counterguard and is complete.
The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. The leather shows almost no wear and the twisted wire wrap is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knuckle bow and counterguard have a nice light patina and nothing is loose. Top of pommel is stamped with inspector’s initials “N.W.P.” and “W.A.” in script letters.
Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard is bright with minor scattered mottling. There are no dents.
An excellent example with a date that falls at the beginning of the Mexican War which raged from 1846-1848. [ad][ph:L]
