MODEL 1832 ARTILLERY SHORT SWORD, DATED 1844, WITH ETCHED BLADE FOR ODD FELLOWS LODGE

$1,150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1216-71

This is a non-military version of the Model 1832 Ames Foot Artillery sword. It has typical characteristics: cast brass grip and a straight, heavy iron double edged blade. There are two side-by-side fullers, starting just below the hilt. Then, after a space of approximately an inch, there is a single broad center fuller that extends toward the blade's spear shaped point. The blade length is approximately 19.25'' and the overall length is 25.5”. The blade is stamped on the reverse, near the hilt "U.S / 1844" in two lines. On the obverse, near the hilt, stamped under a mostly worn away American eagle, is "N. P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD". The blade is clean with some dark scattered spotting. There are no nicks on the blade. Both sides of the blade remain nicely etched with mostly floral motifs. Additionally, one side features clasped hands with scroll beneath. Hand engraved within the scroll, “In dissoluble bands / Our hearts and our hands bend / In social benevolence.”

The hilt and cross guard are cast brass and gilted. The grips have been molded in a scalloped pattern. Unlike the military version, there are no iron rivets securing it to the tang of the blade and no inspector stamps. The pommel is decorated on each side with a heavily incised American eagle, with shield, holding arrows in his left talon and an olive branch in his right talon. The straight cross guard has round quillions on each end.
