This is an 1812 style cavalry saber with accompanying scabbard. The 34" blade is curved and has a slightly clipped point. The blade has no maker or inspector marks. The spine features a clearly stamped “M” denoting that this sword was made for the State of Maryland. The ribbed grip is black leather-covered and has a double wire twist in the ribs. The knuckle bow, guard and quillon are made of one piece of iron with a pierced slot at the top to attach a sword knot. This is fitted into the iron backstrap at the pommel end. The blade tang is neatly and smoothly peened over the pommel. All in very nice condition.
The scabbard is iron and in equally nice condition. The scabbard has an applied iron drag of very minimal profile. There are two suspension rings attached to iron bands around the scabbard. Two small screws hold the throat in place.
A very fine example of an 1812 saber made for the State of Maryland. [jet] [ph:L]
