Classic Civil War cavalry saber believed to be made by Gilbert Dubois in Napanoch, New York.

Sword is in overall very good condition. Blade exhibits gray tone overall with a few darker patches. No edge nicks. Ricasso is strongly stamped with “G. DUBOIS / NAPANOCH / N.Y.” on one side and nothing on the other.  Leather washer is gone.

Brass guard and basket are good. Upper edge of guard is bend forward. All brass exhibits smooth mellow patina.  Gutta Purcha grip is believed to be maker’s attempt at an “improvement” and government contract. It remains in very good condition with fish scale texture and mold seam on top and bottom.

Scabbard is in overall good condition. Smooth surface, nice aged tone, with a few dents which are all located down toward the drag. Complete with both ring mounts and throat.

See John Tillman’s “Civil War Cavalry & Artillery Sabers.” This is the specimen on pages 173-174.

A fine specimen, with unique gutta purcha grip.  [jet][ph:L]
