Item Code: 1268-612

This 1841 dated Ames Foot Artillery sword has a straight, heavy iron blade. It is double edged and the blade is clean with areas of darker spotting. There are two side-by-side fullers, starting just below the hilt. Then, after a space of 0.7", there is a single broad center fuller that extends toward the blade's spear shaped point. The overall blade length is approximately 19.3''. The blade is stamped on the reverse near the hilt "UNITED / STATES / 1841 / W S" in 4 lines. On the obverse, near the hilt and stamped under an American eagle, is "N. P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD" in 2 lines. There is a miniscule nick on the blade’s right side, 2.7” from the tip.  The hilt and cross guard are stamped brass. The grips have been molded in a scalloped eagle feather design. Three transverse iron rivets secure it to the tang of the blade. The pommel is decorated on each side with heavily incised American eagles with shields, holding arrows in the left talon and an olive branch in the right talon. The straight cross quillons terminate in disk shaped finials. The cross guard is stamped on either side of the top flat (where the guard meets the blade) “MPL./ORD.” in two lines, while the opposite is an inspector marked “W.S”.

The included scabbard is in good structural condition with hairline cracks in the finished outer layer of leather.  The center seem is still strongly stitched and the tip is still secure with just a bit of play around the brass rivets. The black leather frog and partial belt attachment is in good condition with no observable cracking and strong stitching.

This would be an ideal addition to any Civil War or Artillery collection as-is, or would mount nicely to a Foot Artillery Belt.
