Adopted by the US army in 1832, this Roman gladius-pattern short sword was a copy of the French Modele 1816.These heavy artillery swords were designed for combat at the guns. Their specific purpose was to disembowel enemy cavalry horses if the gun position was overrun! They remained regulation in armies worldwide well after our Civil War. Russian and Prussian artillery continued to wear them into World War 1.
This fine example was made five years before the Civil War. The solid cast brass hilt has no dents and still has minor traces of gilt. The eagle on the pommel is well rendered and detailed but shows minor wear. The blade is in original polish and shows little wear. There are just a few areas of pitting along the cutting edges. The obverse ricasso is stamped "AMES MFG. CO." over "CHICOPEE". The reverse "US" over "JH" over "1856". The inspection stamps the guard are "JH" and "R.H.K.W."
The scabbard is the regulation pattern with black leather body and a brass throat with a fastening stud. The leather is black in color with no cracking to the finish from age but on the reverse, there is a now stabilized crack in the leather that runs horizontally, this in no way affects the scabbards soundness. The hand sewn seam is perfect. The brass drag shows no dings and is secure. An excellent example. [pe] [ph:L]
