The 29 1/2-inch blade is marked on the ricasso: "WEYERSBURG KIRSCHBAUM & Cie SOLINGEN" while on the spine is a small crown over "RC". The blade has some scuffing but is otherwise in excellent original polish. The Gutta Percha ribbed grip is 4 1/4 inches long and follows the curve of the iron back-strap. There is no center protruding tang like the Prussian Model 1873, and the top of the pommel is secured by one peened pin. The hand guard has the same distinctive "P" shape (as does the Prussian Model 1873) from the top of the pommel to the end where it joins onto the cross guard which ends in a round curl. There is no languet below the cross guard as on the Prussian sabers. The saber is stamped on the cross guard and the iron scabbard "L.M.93." (Landwehr Munitions-Kolonnen = Reserve ammunition supply column. Weapon #93). Landwehr divisions were comprised of older soldiers who passed through the reserves. Their service, prior to the Great War, was generally behind the front lines.
The scabbard has one permanently affixed ring for suspension as well as a rectangular loop. The drag of the scabbard is stamped with a small Saxonian crown over "RC". The scabbard was originally painted black but only about 10% of the paint remains. The metal elements are all very fine with no pitting just some surface grime. This sword dates prior to 1900 and is far rarer than the Prussian equivalent. [pe][ph:L]
