This regulation Union cavalry enlistedman’s saber is complete with scabbard and in very good condition with an untouched brass hilt having the full leather grip wrap with twisted brass wire binding and a bright blade with smooth metal, good edge and point. Still called by collectors the Model 1860 for convenience, the pattern was developed in 1856 as a light cavalry saber that improved on the heavier Model 1840. Production started in 1857, overlapping with manufacture of the earlier pattern into 1858. Manufacture ceased after 1865, but the saber was so well regarded that even the later Model 1906 was patterned after it.

This one was made and marked by Emerson and Silver of Trenton, NJ, who had six US contracts for these sabers from 1862 to 1865, for a total of 27,060 enlisted cavalry sabers, plus artillery sabers, and officer’s swords, etc., as well. This one is dated 1864 and would have come from one of their four 1864 contracts. Thillmann’s chapter on the company in his Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers makes for some interesting reading on the company’s history, business practices and perhaps luck in the market. They are well known for government testimony that curtailed Horstmann’s government business. They were apparently also able to get some substantial late war contracts at higher prices than others, leading Thillmann to suspect there was some backroom dealing going on somewhere.

The hilt shows no bends or breaks. The black leather grip wrap has an excellent surface and color. The twisted brass wire binding is tight. The brass hilt has a really nice, undisturbed, aged patina providing a nice contrast with the unexpectedly bright blade when drawn, with the blade even showing some of the cross-polishing above the ricasso. The blade is smooth, bright, with good edge and point. The peening of the blade tang on the top of the pommel is undisturbed so it has never been apart or tightened up. The markings are good, legible, though a little soft or rubbed. The obverse ricasso is stamped “U.S ./ D.F.M/ 1864” with the last digit light but legible. The inspector’s initials are those of Dexter F. Mossman, and are matched by a small “DFM” on the brim of the pommel cap. Thillmann dates him as active as an Armory Subinspector 1862-1864. The reverse ricasso is stamped “Emerson / &/ Silver/ Trenton / N.J.” The scabbard is complete with throat, ring bands, rings, and drag in place. The body has a nice, undisturbed brown patina and no dents or dings.

This is a very nice example of the regulation Civil War Union cavalry saber made by a well-known U.S. contractor. [sr][ph:L]
