This is a high-quality Ames militia staff sword with knight’s helmet pommel, mameluke style cross guard, and an engraved brass scabbard.
This is a pre-Civil War sword produced circa 1850 by the Ames Manufacturing Company. The sword and scabbard are 38” long overall. The sword is approximately 37” long overall with a 31” long blade. A narrow fuller runs up the middle on both sides. The blade retains a bright finish except where it was frosted and etched with patriotic and floral designs. Some minor dark spotting is scattered about. “Ames Mfg. Co./ Chicopee/ Mass” appears on the ricasso. The sword blade tang peened area is very tight and un-disturbed.
The handle features a gilt finished knight’s helmet pommel, a mameluke style cross guard with a five-point militia star on both sides, a single-link curb chain, and a decorated bone handle. The hilt components retain generous amounts of gold gilt finish with light wear to raised features. The grip is in very good condition with no large chips or cracks.
The bright heavy gold gilded brass scabbard features floral designs on one side. Stamped “AMES MFG. CO./ CHICOPEE /MASS” near the throat on the other. The scabbard has some rub wear overall but, still shows gilded finish well. A few small scattered dents, mostly near the bottom third and along the drag area. There are three ring mounts and a drag on the scabbard.
The company has its origins in a factory established in 1774 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts by the Ames family. Brothers Nathan P. Ames Jr. and James T. Ames moved their tool and cutlery business to a new industrial town on the Chicopee River near Springfield, Massachusetts in 1829 where the Ames company began manufacturing swords for the federal government and state militias.
This is a very fine example of a high quality pre-Civil War Ames Sword. Pre-war militia officer ambrotypes frequently feature this sword in pictures. [stp] [ph:L]
