This saber is an early, seldom seen ‘C. Roby’ enlisted Model 1840 light artillery edged weapon termed a Type-1. Blade exhibits the single, rare one-line maker address “C. ROBY & CO” but no inspector’s mark or date. Per John Thillmann, author of “Civil War Cavalry & Artillery Sabers”, the fact that Roby made Type 1 sabers indicates they were likely interested in contracting with the US government but no Type 1 Roby saber has been found stamped with “US” or an inspection mark.
Saber rests in an original artillery metal scabbard with visible seam, both bands with rings, and solid tip. Termed a Type 1, this C. Roby variation of the m1840 Sword has a recessed hilt and was produced sometime prior to 1859 before the government contracts had started. Made for light artillery, the blade has a pronounced curve with a single wide stopper fuller that measures 23½” long and no narrow fuller. Blade is very good and wears a dull light gray sheen with evidence of scattered minor light pinprick pitting. Clearly marked on the reverse ricasso of the blade is the stamping “C. ROBY & CO” in block format. Obverse ricasso is plain. Saber has a 31½” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top and a single wide fuller. Blade has a few small edge nicks toward the toe and the edge does show evidence of some old sharpening. The guard is slightly loose where it is mated to the pommel, but is securely attached. No leather washer pad. The grip retains its black leather but one strand of wire wrapping remains. A leather sword knot remains attached and in good condition – somewhat dry but uncracked and complete with intact stitching at the tale.
The belt is in dry but somewhat pliable condition. Most of the brass hardware is present, though the plate is unattached and the relevant end section of belt is missing – as are the brass studs and leather drop straps. The end section of leather belt that attaches to the plate is missing. The leather keeper is missing, but the riveted tension hook is present.
Matching numbers of “886” are stamped into the back faces of each of the two-piece belt plate, and “US ALLEGHENY ARSENAL” is prominently stamped into the reverse of the plate itself just above the center.
If you are looking for a mostly complete artillery assembly for display or the rounding out of a collection, this is certainly one to seriously consider. [cm][ph:L]
