This pre-war Ames saber specimen is the forerunner of the type issued to Federal horsemen during the American Civil War. Produced by the Chicopee, Massachusetts firm of Ames Sword Company, this weapon is the Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber that was initially called the ‘new pattern’ 1860 saber. This edged weapon is dated “1859” and was one of five thousand such ‘new pattern’ Model 1860 sabers that Ames delivered under its 1859 contract to the Ordnance Dept from 1859 through early 1861. Interestingly, 1,200 units of this 5,000-unit contract of 1859 sabers were sent south to Virginia just prior to the war.

This saber’s brass handguard has a nice, mellow patina and a very slightly worn leather grip with twisted wire.  The wire is just a touch loose in a few areas but remains complete and presents well.  Pommel bears no inspection stampings.  Saber retains its leather washer and all pieces remain tight.

The 35” blade shows little use in the form of a few small nicks, but has been carefully sharpened with evidence of slight edge honing toward the point.  Overall, the condition is nearing “fine”. The surface is bright and smooth throughout with very little oxidation. Blade markings are sharp, clear, and deeply struck. The obverse ricasso is stamped “US / JH / 1859”. Reverse ricasso has an “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass.” stamp. Steel scabbard is taking on a brown patina and bears no inspector stampings.  All scabbard-mounted pieces are complete and remain firmly attached.

Not just another M1860 in good condition, but a scarce remnant of a pre-war contract that may have made its way into southern hands.  A prime example for the collector.  [cm][ph:L]
