Here is an original, Civil War enlisted Model 1840 artillery saber in good condition. Made for artillery mounted units, this edged weapon is stamped on the obverse ricasso of the blade with a clear stamping “US / JH / 1862” in block format while the reverse ricasso has a light maker’s stamp, “MADE BY / AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS”. This saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top, and a single wide fuller. Blade is largely bright with a single, shallow nick in the unsharpened edge. A slight scuff is noted near the base of the fullers on either side.
Entire brass hilt, including the pommel shows a mix of dull patina (copper-toned) and darker tarnish. Original grips are strong and tight and encircled with original, twisted, brass wire wrap. Light wear across areas of the leather surface is noted. Original leather washer pad is strong and intact.
The accompanying iron scabbard exhibits a dull plum appearance. Surface oxidation offers a slightly pitted texture. Two ¼” long dings/cuts are located on the lower third of the scabbard. No visible stampings on drag. The large, iron mounts are tight and hold the two sword rings securely. Scabbard collar and throat are tight. [cm][ph:L]
