The U.S. Model 1832 foot artillery short-sword is approximately 25” long overall with a 6” solid brass hilt, and a 19” blade.
This model was the first sword contracted by the U.S. with the Ames Manufacturing Company of Springfield (later Chicopee), Massachusetts, with production starting in 1832. As a personal side arm, it was intended for use by the artillery and remained in service until 1872. It was also the issue sword for sergeants and musicians of infantry regiments from 1832 to 1840. While the design was impractical for actual combat, it is believed that artillerymen put this to other uses, such as clearing brush or creating trails.
This is a double-edged sword with single and double fullers on both sides. Cast brass hilt with scaled grip, and a pommel with eagles on both sides. Blade is etched and engraved on both sides with floral and military motifs, including “Nashua Artillery.” This etching is light and does not “jump out.” Blade is stamped N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD under an eagle on one side and UNITED / STATES / 1836 on the other.
This is very different in that it comes with a completely brass scabbard. Has single mount with a ring on each side. Wonderful dark patina on the brass.
The "Nashua Light Artillery" officially became the 1st New Hampshire Light Artillery during the Civil War and fought in all major engagements with the Army of the Potomac from 2nd Bull Run to Appomattox.
A great sword and scabbard, associated with great unit history. [jet][ph:L]
