The blade of this interesting sword measures 26”. It has a main fuller running nearly the entire length with a secondary fuller approx. 18” of the length. The last 8 ½” of the blade has a false edge. The first 6 ¾” of the blade retains its original blued panel with gold washed floral/leaf designs. The balance of the blade is semi-bright and several manufacturing flaws exist. The edge is nearly free of nicks, except for a small one.
The brass stirrup guard hilt has a wonderful untouched patina. The shell shaped quillon is a nice distinctive feature. The original dark horn grip is wrapped with a single strand of brass wire. There are several age cracks in the horn. The backstrap is integral with the pommel cap. Blade and hilt are tight.
The original leather scabbard has a top mount/throat which is punch decorated with what appears to be a stylized American eagle. When we have shown it to a few sword collectors for their opinion several said it could be a dolphin or a sea serpent. The second mount has some geometric designs. Both mounts have original, very small carrying rings. The drag is also brass and plain. The dark leather scabbard has tooled geometric designs on both sides.
A nice addition to any early sword collection. [ss][ph:L]
