This sword, complete with original brass mounted metal scabbard, was imported from France for commercial sale to officers in the US just prior to or during the War Between the States. The sword measures a total length of almost 37 inches from drag to pommel cap. The blade is 30 1/2 inches long with both wide and narrow fullers. The blade is boldly etched with military motifs. The obverse ricasso exhibits two small inspection stamps or poincons. A panoply of arms continues on the blade followed by a foliate design, a spread winged eagle and then a pennant above with the words, " E. PLURIBUS UNUM" topped with additional foliage. The reverse blade at the ricasso starts with the arms motif, followed by foliation, then 3/4-inch-high block letters "US" followed by more arms and foliated designs. The blade has a nice sheen overall and has some minor scattered age discoloration spots. There are the most minor edge nicks visible.
This sword has a detailed, two-branch band, cutout brass hilt with the guard and knuckle bow cast in one piece. The basket of the hilt features prominent letters "US". Wrapping, the shallow center-swelled, wooden handle is a covering of fish skin which is surface worn but 99% intact. Thin copper twisted wire is wrapped around the grips. The Phrygian-style pommel cap border is engraved with an oak leaf floral pattern. A fine condition officer's knot hangs suspended from the knuckle bow. The leather or red cloth blade washer is missing from the ricasso. A mellow age patina covers the pommel, knuckle bow and quillon. The sword’s undented iron scabbard is heat blued and has two plain brass bands and a brass drag. All these mounts exhibit a mellow patina and show service abrasions. The brass bottom mount has dings and dents commensurate with field use. It is missing a small retaining screw but is firmly in place. A solid classic! [pe] [ph:L]
