Looking for all the world like a Napoleonic era sword this weapon is rather the British Military 1896 Pattern Mountain Artillery Sword. It was used by soldiers manning guns in mountainous areas, particularly in Northwest India and Afghanistan, where they were effective in inaccessible locations. The smaller caliber of the artillery used by mountain batteries meant that the soldiers had to fire and manage the guns whilst on bended knee a curved sword was the only alternative.
This traditional style continued with the 1896 Pattern, and it has a 1 1/2 wide curved blade of around 30 inches, flat-backed and double-edged towards the point. The blade is marked on the flat "ROBT MOLE & SONS BIRMINGHAM". The blade is in fine condition showing signs of period sharpening with some light pitting and discoloration down near the tip. The ribbed cast iron grips are painted iron with a brass P-shaped knuckle bow which is marginally bent out of shape from field service. This pattern sword is found with 3 varied guard styles.
The blade is housed in a black leather and brass-mounted scabbard. The scabbard leather is in excellent condition with perfect seam stitching. By many British military sword collectors this Pattern is considered one of the rarest and few are found today with the original scabbards. [pe] [ph:L]
