This scarce saber was manufactured by F.W. Widmann its designer. Andrew Mowbray, in his book THE AMERICAN EAGLE-POMMEL SWORD shows a specimen as figure 51A page 195. F.W. Widmann's company was acquired by Horstmann in 1848. This particular sword could date as early as 1820. Please click on this link (manatarms.indd). The impressive solid brass eagle head pommel with flat strap P hand guard erupting from its mouth. The 60% of the original leather remains on the grips and all the brass wire wrap is intact. There is some play between the guard and the blade. “F.W. WIDMANN" over "PHILADa” in cartouche is well struck and easy to read on bottom of the hand guard. There are 2 brass mounts on the leather scabbard. The scabbard is complete and in solid condition. The 32-inch blade is good, with gold washed engraved floral designs on half the blade. There are several chips along the length of the blade which are not unsightly, and some pitting down near the tip. The overall length of the sword is 38 inches. This rare Marine Corps Saber was made for both full dress and combat. [pe] [ph:L]
