Bearing on the blade the monogram of Maximillion Frederick the First of Bavaria (Maximilian I Joseph, King of Bavaria | Unofficial Royalty). A rarely seen sword it is not unsimilar in design and appearance to the British 1796 dress sword for Heavy Cavalry. The overall length is 40 inches with a 34-inch blade. The blade is diamond in cross section and is 1 inch wide at the hilt tapering to a spear pointed tip. The blade shows great age and pitting down towards the tip but has a pleasing look. The brass hilt is constructed of 3 distinct components and several sections. Basically, it is a D guard with cruciform arms with a 'boat shaped" or "boat-shell" counter guard below this. The wooden grips are covered in 100% original wire. Officially this is a Model 1818, but the crowned monogram "MJ" engraved on the blade is considered by this compiler as dating to the time of Bavaria's alliance with Napoleon (the later monogram was "MJK"). Accordingly, it is not unlikely that this possible pre-pattern sword dates ca. 1810.   [pe] [ph:L]
