Swords by William Glaze are some of the most highly sought after. These were originally provided under contract for the State of South Carolina between 1850-53. These were to be issued to South Carolina mounted units. William Glaze did not manufacture the swords, he imported them from Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) in Solingen, Prussia, and put his unique “Columbia S.C.” stamp on them. The iron curved blade measures approximately 36” long with 27.5 inches long stopped fuller and 17.5 inches narrow fuller. The blade is clean, but dull, with little or no oxidization; it will clean up to excellent. The ricasso is deeply marked “Columbia S.C”.
This sword has an excellent grip with approximately 99% original leather. The twisted wire is 100% intact. The 2-branch guard and pommel are in fine condition with a deep mellow tone. The guard has a small “24” stamped into it. The iron scabbard’s surface exhibits a pewter gray color (mixed with brown tones) which could be remnants of the ubiquitous GAR Hall silver paint so often applied to captured Confederate arms. There are no dings in the scabbard. Both mounts and rings are present as is the throat and heavy drag.
A very fine example, that shows use but no abuse. It is one of just 2000 cavalry sabers from William Glaze at the Palmetto Armory and all were called into Confederate service in 1861. A gem! [pe] [ph:L]
