The 1912 British Cavalry Officer's Sword is akin to the 1908 trooper's sword, but it was an embellished version to separate the officers from the "other ranks" who carried plain swords. With the introduction of the 1908 and 1912 cavalry swords the centuries old debate about whether a cavalry sword should be a cutting or thrusting sword was effectively over. The model 1912 is clearly a sword intended for thrusting and has been regarded by some experts as the best cavalry sword ever created. It was used in World War I and beyond by British Commonwealth cavalry. A lightweight sword, the 1912 has a thick, stiffened almost T-shaped 35-inch blade. The tip is a spear-point style. The "blood gutter" runs for 25 inches. While the last third of the sword was sharpened on both sides to allow for cutting, this is largely a token arrangement, as the sword would have been a poor slashing blade. The blade, a bit dirty, but flawless, is etched on both sides with floral and rococo motifs along with the cypher of King George V. Etched on the ricasso is: "ARMY & NAVY CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY 105 VICTORIA St. S.W." and the spine has serial number " 13415". The owner may be tracible? Please study this link (Army & Navy Stores (United Kingdom) - Wikipedia).
The large highly decorated and tinned iron bowl-like guard gives excellent protection to the hand. The pistol-like grip has a groove for the thumb on the top to maximize point and direction control of the blade. The grips are wooden covered in fish skin. This is 100% intact but the twisted brass wire wrap is all but gone. The laurel leaf decorated weighted pommel helps to balance the blade. The "undress" or battle worthy scabbard is iron but totally covered in protective leather. These sabers rarely come to light anymore and to own one is a must for a Great War collector. [pe][ph:L]
