War of 1812-era U.S. officer’s eagle pommel sword. Bone gripped, brass mounted saber with a great eagle head pommel, a blued and gilt etched blade, and leather scabbard.

There is a stirrup-like brass knuckle bow with slot for sword knot, a quillon with disk slightly downturned, an eagle head on the pommel, and two plain, half round langets. The brass retains remnants of silver plating. The original bone grip exhibits one small chip at the pommel end. The checkering and other carving on the grip remains crisp. There is a slight gap between the bone grip and the pommel backstrap.

The blade is curved with a single broad fuller, a good edge and point, and only a few very minor edge dings. Upper half is blued and etched with floral motifs and trophy of arms on both sides. The etching remains very visible with the original gilt highlights. Stamped on blade spine, “I S & Co” which is likely from New York silversmith/jeweler John Sayre. Sword measures approximately 37” overall.

Leather scabbard is in well-worn condition with some repairs. Silver plated brass drag and middle ring mount remain in place; the throat mount is missing. Stitching on back seam is completely split. Leather is “floppy” on its own and needs support when sword is not inserted.

This early piece has a nice appearance.   [jet][ph:L]
