This Model 1840 Light Artillery saber was made by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1863. Ames was one of the most prolific sword makers in the United States and is considered one of the best.

The 32.5” curved blade is clean and semi-bright. The edge has no nicks. The central stopped fuller runs approximately 25.25” long. One side of the ricasso is very, very faintly marked “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS.” in three lines while the opposite side has a good “1863 / D.R”.

The hilt has a brass Phrygian style pommel cap with a single knuckle bow coming around to a thin guard ending in a circular quillon. The underside original leather washer remains in place. The grip is of wood and covered in leather with a twisted wire wrap. The leather shows light wear and the wire is complete. The knuckle bow is also stamped “D.R” matching the inspector’s initials on the blade. The brass shows a light patina.

Matching bench marks “37” are found stamped on the cross guard and on the scabbard throat.

The iron scabbard is in undented condition with a dark brown tone. No inspector marks are visible on the drag. Scabbard is complete with both rings and mounts.

Recently acquired from the “Old Stone House Museum” in Windsor, NY.  Blue museum sticker with “SHM / S-34” on blade.   [jet] [ph:L]
