This sword was a product of the Ames Manufacturing Company, a manufacturer of swords, tools and cutlery in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was also involved in iron and bronze foundry. Ames was a major provider of swords, light artillery and heavy ordnance in the Civil War. Established in 1774 in Chelmsford, Mass. By 1829 the Ames brothers moved their business to a location on the Chicopee River in Springfield. At the start of the war Ames Company was the largest producer of military items for the Union.
The obverse side of blade stamped at the ricasso “US/A.H./1863. Reverse side “Made by/ Ames Mfg. Co./ Chicopee/ Mass”. Stamping faint on some letters. Blade length 28” and 35 3/8” overall. Bright shiny blade with only a few small dark spots near the base. No dents and a sharp point. Cast brass hilt with simulated wire wrapped handle. Obverse side of knuckle-bow with initials “A.H.C.”, by armory inspector Archibald H. Ceiley, 1862-1863. Also, A.H.C. on brass drag. The hilt displays a nice untouched mellow yellow patina. Undisturbed blade tang peen.
Leather scabbard in very good condition. Shows a little crazing at the junction with the upper mount. Original throat and drag. The throat shows a small dent opposite of the shoulder belt mount. Strong stitching. [stp][ph:L]
