Here is an original Civil War Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber. Termed an Ames Type 2, this saber was made from 1860 through 1865 and features a weapon that has a brass counterguard without a recess.
Blade is in good condition. Made for light artillery mounted units, the saber is stamped on the obverse ricasso of the blade with a clear stamping “U.S. / A.D.K. / 1865” in block format. While the reverse ricasso bears the maker’s mark of “AMES MFG Co / CHICOPEE / MASS” in a thin but, readable stamping. Saber has a 32 ¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top, a single wide fuller and no narrow fuller. Blade exhibits a mixture of shiny metal with scattered specks of mottling. Would probably clean up nicer as the dark spots appear to be light surface. Original leather washer is partially intact.
Pommel has a 3/8” high, domed cap. Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a rich, bronze patina. Original grip, strong and tight. Consisting of seventeen grooves wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with original, twisted, brass wire wrap. Leather is in good condition with small amount of surface finish loss scattered through a few spots. Brass wire wrap is tight. A sub-inspector mark of “J.F” is located on the bow. A large number “40” is stamped on both sides of the guard. Possibly an Indian-war period rack number.
The metal scabbard was once painted gold as used by GAR halls. It now exhibits a nice patina that is about 50% oxidized gold paint. An inspection of the scabbard body reveals no major dents. Drag shows light surface rust. The large, iron ring mounts are tight and hold the two sword suspension rings nicely. Scabbard collar has a screw hole where the throat was mounted but, is now missing. The hole being filled with verdigris, indicating it has been missing for long time.
A handsome specimen of a Federal Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber that was most likely displayed in a GAR or early museum. [stp] [ph:L]
