This is the regulation sword carried by the sergeants of a typical Civil War Union infantry company: one first sergeant and four company sergeants. In some volunteer regiments corporals were issued them as well, perhaps because of their blanket designation as swords for non-commissioned officers: enlisted men appointed on a warrant by the regiment’s commanding officer.

This has a bright, but not over-polished hilt with some mellow age-toning to the grip. The blade shows original factory cross-polishing just above the ricasso and has a good edge, showing bright with the exception of just some shallow gray pitting at the tip and end of the fuller likely from resting in the scabbard in a slightly damp environment. Most notably the sword has a complete scabbard with a “G.W.C.” inspection mark on the drag matching that on the knucklebow of the sword, indicating they have been together. The blade marks are good- a slightly worn, but legible “MADE BY / AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS” stamp on the left ricasso, and sharp blade inspection and acceptance stamps on the right reading, “US / G.K.C. / 1864.”

The brass-mounted black leather scabbard is very good, solid, with good color and finish to the leather, showing only some thin age hairlines to the finish, no flaking, and a tight seam. Both mounts are in place, the upper mount with hook, both showing some only mellow age toning and shallow handling dings, with a couple of thin spots of verdigris on the upper mount. The leather sealing pad is in place on the underside of the guard.

This is a very good example of a regulation issue sword that would be key in any  Civil War infantry or edge weapons collection display, and show off very nicely next to a set of sergeant’s chevrons or the red worsted-wool sash of a First Sergeant. Needless to say, if one of your ancestors served as a Union infantry sergeant, chances are he was issued one of these. Please see our photos.  [sr][ph:L]
