A U.S. Model 1840 light artillery saber manufactured by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) of Solingen, Germany, under a United States Government contract. The brass hilt consists of a D-guard with a Phrygian helmet pommel and a plain, flat disk quillon. The wooden grip is covered with black leather and wound with twisted brass wire, and the hilt is configured with a recess beneath the guard that permits insertion of the scabbard. The curved blade measures 31 1/2 inches and carries a wide stopped fuller running from the ricasso to within about 12 inches of the tip.

The knuckle bow is stamped with a Prussian inspector's mark, read as a crown over "G." The spine of the blade is stamped with inspector's marks read as "(Crown) / FW / 48 / (Crown) / G."

The Federal Government's principal contractor for the Model 1840 saber, the Ames Manufacturing Company, was reportedly unable to meet demand for these arms at the height of the Mexican War. The Ordnance Department accordingly contracted with Schnitzler & Kirschbaum in August of 1847 for 1,000 artillery sabers.

CONDITION

The hilt is in very good condition, with a smooth, even, mellow patina. The grip retains its original leather and brass wire wrapping and presents a uniform appearance. The blade is in very good condition with a smooth grey surface; the edge shows some very minor nicks. Offered without scabbard.   [ss] [ph:L]
