RARE ORIGINAL W. KIDDER MARKED CASE FOR A COLT MODEL 1849 POCKET MODEL REVOLVER

$2,695.00 SOLD

Item Code: 490-3004A

This is an original hardwood partitioned case for a .31 caliber Colt M1849 Pocket Model Revolver as made by Walter Kidder. His cases are very rare and were mostly used on decorated Colt revolvers in this period.

The wood case displays very attractive grain and tone. All four corners are reinforced with brass fittings. Two brass hinges are fitted into the back and look to have had some period “adjustments” made. The case features a brass key box-lock in the front. The lock works well and the key is included. There is a shield-shaped escutcheon around the key hole made of ivory. The inside of the case is stamped "MANUFACTURED / SOLELY BY W. KIDDER" and "PATENT, APR. 1854" between the two hinges.

Inside, the original compartment dividers remain. The original brown velvet lining also remains. The lining on the bottom in the larger pistol compartment shows wear caused by the high points of a revolver; most notably the cylinder. A number of lead bullets remain in the small corner compartment.

Velvet lining shows some honest wear; almost all in the lower portion. The wood remains very solid with only one thin 2” long crack on the lid.

Walter Kidder studied medicine with his father at Harvard and Berkshire Medical Schools and graduated from the latter in 1846. He commenced practice in Lowell with his father for six years. Then he resigned and moved to New York, giving attention to an invention of his own for four or five years. In the Civil War, he served as surgeon in Scott's "Nine Hundered", a body of calvary from New York. He moved to Townsend, MA as a physician about 1864. Two or three years later he settled in Jersey City, NJ, where he died January 29, 1872. He was married, February 15, 1854 to Lucy Russ Burnap. He had three sons.  [jet] [ph:L]
