This shows a pleasing, muted blue color to the lock plate surface, with a little thin brown tone showing on the hammer, with the recesses of the lettering and eagle showing showing some darker brown. The nose of the hammer shows some light pitting, with a small dusting on the upper forward neck, both likely resulting from percussion caps. Otherwise the metal is smooth. Markings are sharp: eagle with shield on chest over “US” forward and “SPRINGF/FIELD/1847” at rear of plate. Inside of plate shows mottle light and dark gray with some blue on bridle and sear. Springfield produced 15,018 M1842 muskets that year. Some of these locks may have also made their way onto muskets assembled in early 1846 since barrels tended fail inspection more than locks.
