Mexican War dated US M1842 musket lock. Lock is complete. Metal shows shallow pitting and thin crusty surface overall, with the plate showing a mix of faded blue, gray and thin brown, with the brown stronger on the hammer. Eagle with shield on its chest over “US” forward of the hammer and “SPRING/FIELD/1845” at rear of plate. The upper portion of the eagle and wing at right are tougher to make out. The markings at the rear of the plate are good. Inside of plate shows brown gray with some thin blue on screw heads, etc. Springfield produced 12,107 muskets that year. Given the higher failure rate of barrels, some of these 1845 dated locks probably made their way onto muskets with 1846 dated barrels in the early part of that year. [sr][ph:m/L]
