Sharp markings: eagle with shield on chest over “US” forward and “SPRINGF/FIELD/1846” at rear of plate. This shows largely as silver gray with some bluish-gray tones that may be faded case, and few smaller dark gray spots and some shallow corrosion on rear of plate. Hammer shows as gray with rubbing to lighter color on raised areas, some rust in recesses on the face, deeper corrosion and pitting on the reverse. Internal lock components are good, gray with some dark gray areas, smooth metal with some shallow rust on the sear arm. Small factory inspector initials. Please see our photos. Springfield produced 14,265 M1842 muskets that year. Some of these locks may have also made their way onto muskets assembled in early 18476 since barrels tended fail inspection more than locks.
