This Model 1863 Springfield was an improved version of the Model 1861, still a muzzle-loading .58 caliber rifle musket (i.e. a rifle of musket length,) but using a recurved and beveled hammer, bolster without clean-out screw whose outside was flush with the lockplate and whose nipple was closer to the bore and had a straight vent, giving more positive ignition to the main charge. There were other changes as well, but those most closely related to the lock, with the new design also used on the Model 1864. Springfield began production of the M1863 in April 1863, turning out 183,064 by year’s end, and another 90,201 by the end of June 1864. Since barrels tended to fail in proof more than locks, it is possible this could have ended up on one of the early 1864 assembled M1863 rifle muskets as well. The M1864 (also known as the M1863-Type 2) used the same form of lock, but chances are the 1863 dated locks had all been used by the time production of that model commenced in mid-1864. This is a very strong example with sharp markings and smooth metal still showing some muted case color on the front of the lockplate and more pronounced case colors on the hammer.
