"S.N. & W.T.C." stamped on a Civil War-era musket lockplate stands for Samuel Norris and William T. Clement. Operating out of Springfield, Massachusetts, this partnership secured a private state contract during the Civil War to produce Model 1861 and Model 1863 rifle muskets. While most Civil War contractors produced firearms directly for the federal government, Norris & Clement specifically fulfilled orders to arm the state militia of Massachusetts.

The whole piece is clean and remains semi-bright with the works and back of the lockplate remaining dark. Face of lockplate is stamped with an Eagle over “U.S.” in front of the hammer, "S.N. & W.T.C. / FOR MASSACHUSETTS" under the bolster, and “1863” behind the hammer. All mechanical parts are fine and in place.
