This is an antique French musket lock plate in good “relic” condition; approximately 7” long overall.
The only mark visible on the lock plate is the strong “US” surcharge behind the hammer. Surface pitting obscures any original maker-markings that were in front of the hammer. This lock was converted from flint, and features a percussion hammer.
Back side of lock is complete with all parts except the mainspring. Tumbler, sear, sear spring, and bridle are all in place.
The piece is a very good condition relic. The metal has a dark brown tone with areas of pitting. All components are frozen in place.
The application of the “US” stamp follows 1777 directions from Washington for marking government property and seems to have been applied to arms at various times from 1778 to 1812 depending on where the arms were located. [jet] [ph:L]
